logic: in my own words

May 11th, 2009 (11:48 pm)

someone posted this set of questions on an internet forum I visited and here are my answers:

1 What is logic/reason? in my own words: if you see it, you should believe it, if you haven't, then you should look for it
lol- or maybe it is a way to find the truth
2 How does someone apply it to philosophy or politics? people value reason/logic/a way to find the truth so they use these to make decisions
3 What is cause and effect? a happens, then b because of a
4 Where does someone start when following cause and effect? no answer.
5 What is nihilism/extinentialism? nihilism is the philosophy that nothing matters, or nothing has a purpose
6 Why do many philosophers view it as unreasonable? they do?
7 What role does IQ play in using reason and logic? everybody thinks, but I guess people with higher IQ's might value truth more? I don't know
8 Is reason automatic? no
9 What is common sense? doesn't exist
10 Where should one start when trying to understand and learn about philosophy? take a class?

how to stay cheerful

May 11th, 2009 (11:46 pm)

warning: I'm not an expert
1. exercise
2. listen to feel-good music, read feel-good books, watch feel-good films and t.v.
3. talk to people-however, people are imperfect, at some point they WILL let you down. Try to forgive but don't waste effort getting mad or sad.
4. do something you're good at/enjoy-puzzles are fun!
5. do something creative
6. think positive

Justice

May 11th, 2009 (11:40 pm)

This relates to the 'knowledge is power' post I made earlier.

Justice doesn't really exist because it varies from person to person. What is wrong and right is ultimately a matter of opinion. There can be some rational thought behind opinions on morality only to an extent...then it's up to the person to decide.

At least at the moment. For world peace, science-or some method everyone agrees on-will somehow have to define justice.

So don't let anyone tell you you're wrong! But don't tell anyone they're wrong-at least when it comes to morality. :)

(Proper) Democracy is a wonderful thing here. Majority "rules" but people have freedom of speech to influence others to think differently-therefore change laws.

comment/message if this doesn't make any sense

Abortion

A pressing issue...
I can totally see both sides to this coin, but in the end I think it is unjust.
.....
2 questions:
1. when does human life begin?
2. is killing ever justified?

my answers:
1. at conception.
2. I'm a bit uncertain.
I think for most, abortion is wrong. But then again, we'd have many unwanted babies with the world already suffering enough from overpopulation. But, maybe the people should enforce the death penalty on some criminals to help overpopulation so the fetusus can at least have an oppurtunity at life. I'm a little unsure, but I think we should give all fetuses a chance at life.

nature vs nurture vs ??

May 11th, 2009 (11:33 pm)

I'm a psychology student. I've been thinking about this lately: psychology is based around that everything that make people who they are is nature or nurture. Does the nature vs. nurture debate leave anything that makes up people to be individuality? If people are the products of nature or nurture, are we even free to do anything on our own?

I suggest that if there is something that can't be explained by nature nor nurture, then psychology needs to add a 3rd wheel on...and call it "soul".
haha.

possible reasons something may be bad

May 11th, 2009 (11:19 pm)
Tags: ,

1. harm to self-it could lead to a burden on others to take care of you
2. harm to others-obvious
3. harm to environment-some don't care, I do because we have one earth and if we abuse it, we're gone too
4. ???

of course this is completely my opinion, but it helps for people to have their own clear reasons like these for why something is bad

knowledge is power

May 11th, 2009 (11:12 pm)

I'm lazy so I'm going to copy/paste some of what I wrote elsewhere on the internet to explain this:

"I think what is good and bad need to be specifically defined and agreed on then I think everything should be studied to find out whether it is good or bad and voila! we have laws/rights. Then maybe every 100 years debate subjects of the time should be studied again. I mean come on: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... what is that?"

"if everything were studied there would be no room for opinion"

...and some more:

"ok I really don't know if it is possible but let me try to explain it better:
here is a quote I found yesterday on the internet that helps me explain: Why does there always have to be proof to know whether something like porn is right or wrong? The problem with the "there's shades of gray everywhere" argument is that it can be applied to anything. Whether you like or not, some things are objectively right and some things are objectively wrong. Porn is objectively wrong. If you don't believe me, then ask yourself "Would I be happy if my daugther went into porn?" Once you ask yourself that question, the next question would be "Why?"

what I think people should try to do is eliminate those "shades of gray" and then make laws/rights and on top of that I hope one day there will be no "shades of gray" through many many studies and polls and whatever else it takes to honestly, logically, and fairly eliminate those shades of gray"

this is just my theory, I have no idea if it could ever work or even if maybe humans weren't meant to know or agree on everything

...and so knowledge is power because if everyone knew everything it is my theory that people would fight much less and agree on more thus making a peaceful society for people

I hope this makes sense.

Start

May 11th, 2009 (11:07 pm)

I do a great deal of thinking. I want everything to be fair and just and right and honest. Lately I have been viewing some documentaries that have inspired me to think in new ways. I hope to address some important issues in this blog. I hope to give people ideas on how to think and do things in better ways so eventually our descendants and the world all over many years from now can enjoy peace or even utopia maybe. It will be a gradual change I do not expect to fully see in my lifetime; but if I see a start of change I would be happy.
